St. John’s Wort is a perennial, flowering herb found in temperate climates of Europe.
It is characterized as one of nature’s treasures. For this reason, it is often referred as “balsam”.
In Greece it exists in many areas and one can recognize it by its characteristic yellow color, in its flowering season. The use of this herb seems to start from the ancient Greek years, when it was used as a herbal medicine to treat internal as well as external problems.
In addition, one of its most common uses in ancient Sparta was for the healing of sword wounds.
There has been done much clinical and chemical research on St. John’s Wort in recent years and continues today. Their results so far highlighted seven groups of medicinally active compounds in this amazing herb.
The two most important medicinally active compounds of St. John’s Wort are:
- Hypericin, and
- Hyperforin.
Hypericin is the most active compound of the herb with the highest concentration in the flowering tops of the plant. Hypericin and hyperforin are two compounds that have remarkable antidepressant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
It also contains flavonoids, xanthones, phenolic acids and essential oils. These compounds give the herb its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
This product has an easy-to-use form because it does not flow like oil. Just like the plain oil, it can help relieve rheumatic and joint pains and sprains.
Also, it can help with burns, atopic eczema, insect bites and skin irritations.
In any case it doesn’t replace the medication prescribed by the doctor.
