Calendula officinalis is an annual wildflower, with bright yellow or orange flowers. It is often found on the European continent and grows mainly at low altitudes.
The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) includes Calendula officinalis on its list of medicinal plants as generally recognized as safe (GRAS), however it should be avoided by people who are allergic to plants in the Asteraceae/Compositae family.
The important components contained in Calendula flowers are triterpene saponins, flavonoids and carotenoids, which give the flower its orange and yellow color.
